Although I can talk about saving and being frugal, my favorite thing to talk about in terms of money is how to make extra money. I guess because it’s on me to find the extra money and to add to my nest. It feels better to be able to make more to cover the vacation I want or the extra expense that just happened that took a chunk out of savings.
It’s like a scavenger hunt sometimes. And I’ve spent the last 6 years setting up my lifestyle to maximize my time to do what I want so finding easy ways to pad my income is great.
If you’re like that too then this list is for you. Here’s a quick list of 8 ways you can make extra money starting today. And don’t just look through the list and wonder if any will work. Actually go through the list, sign up for some of the deals and see how it works for you.
Now I’m going to be honest, most of these are NOT about following your passion, but if you just need to start bringing in some money, then they will do that for you.
Let’s get started
1. Online Surveys
If you watch TV or commute daily on a train or as a passenger, then you can swap out mindlessly scrolling through social media with taking online surveys for some extra cash. Here are the best ones to take surveys with.
- Inbox Dollars
- VIP Voice
- Toluna Opinions
- Survey Rewardz
- Pinecone Research
- Harris Poll
- American Consumer Opinion
- Cashback Research
- Grab Points
Swagbucks and Inbox Dollars are the two most popular ones, but try all of them to see how it works for you. In fact, I’ll be spending a month using all of them and reporting back on how well each one is and rating them according to ease, money, and reliability.
How they work is when a survey is available, you’ll get notification via email. Each survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and you can earn between $5-15 for each survey.
I would setup a separate email account when signing up for these so you don’t clog your main email account with the survey companies.
2. Start a blog
Aside from #6 below, I will always say start a blog.
It’s yours to create and make money from. I started a different blog in 2014 and sold it this year for five figures. That was after it was averaging $1,200/month for me. And I know several whose site makes WAY more for them.
The issue with creating a blog is you have to start early and be ok with not making anything at first. Some people have a hard time with delayed gratification and will quit right about the time things will start taking off on their site.
Don’t be like that. If you start a blog, promise yourself you’ll work on it even when it doesn’t seem like anything’s happening with it. Then things will start taking off and you’ll have an amazing asset that you can build or sell.
3. Go Shopping
Most of us already shop for different things each month. From grocery shopping to eating out. And there are a handful of apps and websites that will pay you back to use their apps or to go through their website first.
Here are a list of the best ones that will get you started
There’s a little bit of setup with some of them, but once you have their browser extension or app, just make sure to use it when you’re shopping for anything.
For others, you just let it scan your inbox to look at your receipts and they’ll let you know if a price drop happened on anything you’ve recently purchased and if you are owed money from those stores.
In terms of sites like Trim, they’ll look at bills like your cable bill from Comcast and negotiate better deals on your cable or internet bill.
Some of these apps overlap in their services, so pick the ones you like the best and get rid of the rest.
4. Freelance Writing
Online content is booming these days. If you know a lot about one subject or like writing about one topic, then offer your services to businesses who are looking to build up their business blog. For instance, this woman had been a dental assistant and moved into being a freelance writer for dentists and makes $1700-1900/month working just 10 hours a week.
The key here is to go really narrow in a topic that you already know. This way you are very knowledgeable about the topic you’re writing about and the research part won’t take as long.
My favorite place to look for freelance writing gigs is Problogger job board.
5. Online Transcription
If you’re a fast typist and can understand what people are saying, then you can transcribe online. Sites like Rev will pay you to transcribe audio files for their clients.
Make sure your typing is up to par and that you can get through a lot quickly, otherwise it might not be worth your time.
6. Resell on Amazon
Selling on Amazon is one of my favorite ways to start making extra money for that vacation or paying off bills. You can either go out into your city and find items to sell on Amazon or you can stay online and do it all from your computer. The choice is yours.
7. Assemble Furniture
If you’re handy and like putting things together, then you can offer to assemble furniture for people. My partner does this and loves it. You can make an average of $30/hr. Sites like Amazon services and Taskrabbit makes it easier to connect people needing assembly with people who do the assembly.
And IKEA recently bought TaskRabbit so most of their assemblies will be for IKEA related furniture soon.
For Amazon services, your best bet is to pick a category that you would like to offer local services in and go through the application process. It’s a little lengthy and their requirements are a bit stringent, but it will set you apart from some other people who don’t apply.
8. User Testing
With all the new websites popping up everywhere, the companies need to make sure that the sites are user friendly and do what visitors expect. So they hire company to have users test the site and provide feedback.
There are several to choose from and, unlike the surveys, not everyone who applies will be accepted.
The process is pretty straightforward with them. Just sign up with your email address, take a sample test and they decide if they want to hire you or not.
Once accepted, you’ll get access to the tests that need to be completed and you’ll earn $10-20 per test.
Here are a few sites to become a tester with:
This list will get you started looking for different side hustles that you can start to make different streams of income. Start with one, then slowly add more streams to your list so you can have several streams bringing in cash on the side.
Of course, there’s a ton more ways to make extra money on the side. If you’ve found an interesting way to make extra money, let us know in the comments below.
